The rotary tablet press is a mechanical device that unlike the single punch tablet press has several tooling stations which rotate to compress granules/powder mixture into tablets of uniform size, shape (depending on the punch design), and uniform weight. It was developed to increase the output of tablets.
The rotary tablet press is now the mainstream product in the market, it has many advantages in various aspects.
Advantages of Rotary Tablet Machines
- Rotary press decreases waste of valuable formulation in non-specific tablets.
- A machine is effectively a multiple-station unit affording more rapid production than a single tablet press.
- There is independent control of the weight and hardness of tablets by the weight control unit.
- There is less trial and error involved compared with manual operation The machine can be fine-tuned to meet all specifications.
- Reduced powder wastage.
- Tablet pressure is controlled through a lever.
- Filling the powder is done automatically.
- Machines are supplied without punches or dies which have to be ordered according to the desired product.
- Significant high output of 9000 up to 500,000 tablets/hour leading to increased production efficiency, money, and saving in process time.
Disadvantages of Rotary Tablet Machines
As for the disadvantages, a rotary tablet press cannot be used for tablets that are too large. Often, however, most of the requirements can be met by a variety of rotary presses.
